Veseli me, da sem to popoldne tukaj z vami ob uvedbi novega bankovca za 50 €. Uvedba je vrhunec izredno obsežnih raziskav in izjemne predanosti mojih sodelavcev v ECB in Eurosistemu, ki jim čestitam, ker so spet proizvedli vrhunski izdelek. Čeprav bankovci morda niso deležni tolikšne pozornosti kot drugi vidiki naše denarne politike, so ena od naših temeljnih nalog. Njihova vloga pa je v nekaterih pogledih v euroobmočju še pomembnejša kot v drugih delih sveta.

Elektronska plačila sicer postajajo bolj priljubljena, vendar je gotovina še vedno naše najpomembnejše plačilno sredstvo. Kot je pokazala anketa o uporabi gotovine, ki bo kmalu objavljena in je bila izvedena v imenu ECB, se več kot tri četrtine vseh plačil na prodajnih mestih v euroobmočju opravi z gotovino. Po vrednosti je to nekoliko več kot polovica. Zato gotovina celo v današnji digitalni dobi ostaja gonilna sila našega gospodarstva.

In to velja zlasti za bankovec za 50 €, ki je naš najpomembnejši apoen. V obtoku jih je več kot 9 milijard, kar predstavlja 46% vseh eurskih bankovcev. To je več kot skupno število bankovcev, izdanih ob uvedbi eurske gotovine leta 2002.

Torej je jasno, da morajo ljudje za delujoče gospodarstvo zaupati gotovini – biti mora trpežna, lahko preverljiva in takoj na voljo. In kar je morda najpomembnejše, biti mora varna: ostati moramo korak pred ponarejevalci, ki bi lahko spodkopali zaupanje javnosti v denar. Zato pri razvoju bankovcev v središče vedno postavljamo inovativnost ter si prizadevamo uporabljati najnovejšo in najučinkovitejšo tehnologijo izdelave bankovcev.

Novi bankovec za 50 € na primer vključuje vse izboljšane zaščitne elemente z novega bankovca za 20 €, zato je še varnejši pred ponarejanjem kot bankovci iz prve serije. Poleg tega je zaradi krepkejših velikih črk in številk na sprednji strani ter reliefnih oznak ob robovih tudi prijaznejši za uporabo za slepe in slabovidne.

Da bi Eurosistem seznanil javnost z novim bankovcem, je izvedel obsežno komunikacijsko kampanjo, katere cilj je bil nagovoriti uporabnike prek več kanalov. S tem so zainteresirane strani dobile potrebne infomacije o bankovcu in njegovih zaščitnih elementih.

Vendar obstaja še en razlog, zakaj so bankovci ena od naših temeljnih nalog – razlog, ki je za euroobmočje pomembnejši kot za druge dele sveta. V večnacionalni uniji, kakršna je naša, je namreč neprimerljivo težje ustvariti skupno identiteto kot v enonacionalni državi z lastno kulturo in zgodovino. Euro je to, kar nam je vsem skupno – euro je otipljiv simbol evropske enotnosti.

Kadar v roki držimo eurski bankovec in vemo, da ga lahko uporabljamo v 19 državah, nas to spomni na globoko integracijo, ki jo je dosegla Evropa. Državljani euroobmočja namreč v odgovor na vprašanje o najpomembnejših elementih evropske identitete najpogosteje navajajo enotno valuto, takoj za demokracijo in svobodo. In kljub težavam v zadnjih letih je trenutno podpora enotni valuti 70-odstotna in tako enaka najvišji ravni, zabeleženi v obdobju pred krizo.

V zadnjih devetih mesecih je bilo v sodelovanju z nacionalnimi centralnimi bankami, kreditnimi institucijami in proizvajalci opreme za bankovce posodobljenih na sto tisoče naprav in instrumentov, kar pomeni, da so novi bankovci za 50 € – od danes naprej – na voljo.
